Tutorial: Scanning and Uploading Images

Software: GIMP
Can't afford Photoshop? GIMP is probably your next best option. It offers most all of the image editing tools you'll find in photoshop. The interface is the only major weak point, being a bit hard to get use to, but if you can get over that, you've found a nice way to save some money. They have some tutorials available online as well, in case you're interested.

Tutorial: Face Tutorials by Linda Bergkvist
Artist Linda Bergkvist has some excellent digital face tutorials online on her website. There's a tutorial on each part of the face, the hair, and bit on skin tones. Even if you don't paint digitally, you may find these tutorials helpful.

ebook: Dynamic Figure Drawing by Burne Hogarth
This is a great figure drawing book available online for free. The book covers more advanced figures dynamic, moving poses. The figures are a bit overly muscular, but it is sometimes helpful to see the critical anatomical points in detail to learn their form and position.
